In 1978 Bob Chinn and his daughter, Marilyn, began to travel around the country doing research for the Midwestern seafood restaurant Bob had envisioned for some time. After years of planning and development, the father/daughter team negotiated the purchase of a shuttered building on Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling. The 175-seat “Bob Chinn’s Crab House” Restaurant opened two days before Christmas in 1982 and was an instant success. In the late 80’s, Bob Chinn’s opened additional seating on the porch and eventually became a 650-seat restaurant.

Located in Trondheim, Norway, it is much more than just a building; it is a tangible manifestation of the global commitment to sustainability and innovation. Conceived as an advanced research laboratory and a practical example of sustainable construction practices, it represents the point of convergence between architecture, technology and environmental awareness. In essence, architecture design is more than the creation of buildings; it is a means of improving lives, communities, and societies. As we look towards the future, it is essential that we continue to harness this power and potential to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing and functional, but also socially responsible and environmentally sustainable. Housing is a diverse architectural typology whose configuration is determined not only by those who design it but also by the use of those who live in it. Therefore, homes are fundamentally adaptable structures that evolve in line with their time and users, undergoing constant changes manifested in the ways of living.

Furthermore, they could be used to optimize designs for factors such as energy efficiency, structural integrity, and user comfort. The use of CAD has allowed architects to create more precise and detailed designs, significantly speeding up the design process. It has also improved collaboration, allowing multiple team members to work on the same design simultaneously. CAD’s ability to easily modify designs has allowed for greater flexibility and experimentation during the design process.
These fundamental principles guide architects in their design process, shaping the form and function of the structures they create. In the following section, we will delve into different architectural styles and explore how these principles are expressed and interpreted in each. Classical architecture, drawn from the ancient Greeks and Romans, is characterized by its symmetry, proportion, and adherence to a set of canonical rules and orders (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian). It values harmony and balance above all, resulting in designs that exude a sense of timeless elegance and order. The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (B.A.) is a two-year major that begins in the junior year of residence.
With visitors from China, Germany, Spain, Brazil, India, Turkey, Japan, and many more, the design week showcases a plethora of exhibitions, installations, talks, and panels. As the week comes to a close, running from April 15-21st, 2024, this article highlights diverse installations throughout the city relevant for architects and designers globally. The exhibit boldly confronts the issue of wastefulness inherent in traditional construction practices. Installed inside an office in Brera that is ordinarily occupied by a Milan architecture firm, the exhibit displays a large pile of construction materials typically destined for landfill.

The materials are meticulously arranged to showcase the sheer volume of waste generated by the design community. Social infrastructure encompasses the resources and services that allow the creation of communal bonds and social connections. Within the built environment, it manifests through public spaces like parks, libraries, and community centers alongside threshold spaces such as public transportation stops.

If the function is chiefly utilitarian, as in a factory, communication is of less importance. If the function is chiefly expressive, as in a monumental tomb, utility is a minor concern. In some buildings, such as churches and city halls, utility and communication may be of equal importance. Importantly, the impact of architectural design transcends the physical structures it creates.
In this sense, modular architecture has consistently presented itself as a dynamic design strategy that has revolutionized housing, developing versatile solutions for sustainable spaces and construction practices. Thus, modular housing has been fertile ground for exploring and deepening ways of inhabiting space and addressing human needs. From the prefabricated catalog houses of the 19th century to the post-World War II housing boom, its evolution reflects both past proposals and the exploration of new concepts for the future. Moreover, advancements in technology have expanded the toolkit available to architects, enabling more precise design, efficient construction, and novel forms.
While the basic principles of design remain consistent, their application varies across architectural styles. Below, we delve into a few prominent styles and examine their unique takes on these principles. The development of architectural design did not happen in a vacuum – it is a vivid testament to the evolution of human civilization, reflecting cultural, technological, and societal changes over the centuries.

While this program is not NAAB-accredited, it does provide a strong foundation for those students who elect to pursue studies in architecture and related fields such as art history, design, fine arts, engineering, environmental design, and urban studies. In the United States, the net solar power generation has increased by more than 113,000 million kilowatt hours in the last decade. Solar integration with residential projects saves homeowners money on energy bills and increases property value over time. As solar integration technology advances, the advantages span beyond financial and environmental; solar panels are assuming an aesthetic role in modern architecture, too. The incorporation of these technologies into architectural practice is reshaping the built environment, opening up new possibilities for innovative, efficient, and sustainable design. As technology continues to advance, we can expect it to play an even more prominent role in the future of architecture design.

Digital fabrication technologies have expanded the possibilities of what can be designed and built. Architects can create complex, customized designs that would be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve with traditional methods. For example, 3D printing has been used to create everything from architectural models to full-scale building components, offering new opportunities for innovation and customization. By creating a comprehensive digital representation of a building, architects, engineers, and contractors can work more collaboratively, resulting in improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness. BIM also facilitates better decision-making by providing detailed information about a building’s performance, maintenance, and lifecycle costs.

They not only provide diverse aesthetics but also different ways of understanding and interacting with the spaces we inhabit. The importance of architecture design is multifaceted, with its influence extending far beyond the aesthetic appeal of our cities and towns. It holds a prominent role in shaping society, contributing to urban planning, and promoting sustainable living. It encapsulates the overall planning and functional design of the built environment, including the manipulation and coordination of material, technology, light, and shadow. It takes into account a wide array of factors, including the building’s intended use, the local climate, available materials, building codes and regulations, and the specific wishes of the client.
